Rolls Royce Hydrodynamic Research Center

CFD integration and GC-portal in a linux cluster

At the hydrodynamic research center of Rolls Royce the viscous calculation are concentrated around the CFD analysis with Fluent. The department felt an increased demand for computer power and started to look around for a new solution.

After having looked into different high performance solutions and alternatives, Rolls Royce choose an AMD based Linux cluster for parallel computing delivered by Gridcore AB.

The main issue of the solution was:

Faster CFD analyses
Sufficient memory for larger CFD analyses
Support for geographically distributed competence

To ensure the above, a cluster portal was installed onsite in August 2002. The new compute resources make it possible for the department to do finer analyses than before during a much shorter time. Further more, with the use of thin clients the cluster is accessible from different geographical locations such as England and Sweden.

                                                                                         Quoting Johan Lundberg, CFD-Engineer:

"Using the Gridcore way of setting up Linux clusters has proved us with a high performance solution for a fraction of the cost of other high performance computing solutions. The Gridcore staff has shown good expertise of tuning the system and delivered a solution that fits our needs."
